93 VW Cabriolet- clutch goes to floor... is it time to put the cabby to sleep?

At a light today, the clutch just stopped working- pedal goes to the floor but does not work. Was able to move it by "power shifting", but the clutch does nothing. The pedal does move the clutch arm, but the clutch does not engage (or is it disengage?- I never understood the mechanics of clutches)... any hope for an easy fix or is this a major job? a local mechanic quoted me 1100-1200 to replace the clutch... I love the car, but can't afford that. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I can follow directions.... any chance of me replacing the clutch myself? for the record- briano is the VW master in my humble opinion.... electrical problem was the load reduction relay- $6 fix.
