If that was a random person it would be weird, but coming from your father it is entirely normal behavior. You say he wasn't in your life much. Perhaps he is simply trying to make up for lost time? It doesn't sound particularly strange to me, at any rate. Being overprotective is pretty much par for the course where parents are concerned.
